West Bengal: Man loots petrol pump in Durgapur, guns down driver who tried to stop him

An armed man looted a petrol pump and gunned down a truck driver who tried to stop him in Durgapur on Sunday night. The incident has been captured on CCTV, and the police are using the footage to track down the miscreant, who escaped on a motorcycle with around Rs 1 lakh.

Sources said the truck driver, Madan Chauhan, who worked for the owner of the petrol pump in DPL area, was sleeping when he suddenly heard a noise. He then spotted a man running, after which he grabbed the miscreant’s hand and asked him who he was. The man, who was carrying a pistol, then pumped three bullets into Chauhan; one struck his head and the other two his abdomen. Chauhan died on the spot. Officials from Coke Ovan police station rushed to the site, but the gunman had escaped by then.

“He (Chauhan) was shot dead when he tried to stop the miscreant from running away. We are monitoring the CCTV footage and will soon trace the accused,” said a police officer. Sources said police suspected that the gunman, who had entered the petrol pump’s cash room through a window, was Deepak Shaw, a known thug of Nepali Para.

The incident has triggered panic in the area. Local residents said the lack of police patrolling was to blame.
