A 35-year-old woman sustained severe burns in an acid attack by her estranged husband at Bankim Nagar Colony in Nadia district’s Dhantala on Sunday night. The district police said the victim, Gita Das, was cooking when the man, Uttam Das, threw acid on her face. She sustained burn injuries on the left side of her face and body.
She screamed for help, but by the time her parents rushed to her, the accused had fled the scene. Gita was immediately taken to Ranaghat Sub-divisional Hospital. “We have recorded the victim’s statement. A case has been registered under sections 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 326 A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of the IPC. We are trying to trace the accused,” said a police official. A source in the police said, Gita and Uttam were married for about four years. It was an arranged marriage and the accused used to torture her regularly.

This forced Gita to leave her husband and go to her parent’s house, where she had been living for the past two years. All this while, Uttam would regularly visit Gita at her parents’ place, drunk, and would regularly fight with them. Gita and her family members never lodged a police complaint against Uttam, thinking it would bring shame to the family.
On Sunday night, when Gita was cooking, Uttam tiptoed into the kitchen with acid in his hand and threw it on her face. Nadia police have launched a manhunt to catch the accused.
The woman wanted to get legally separated from her husband, the police source added. The accused had, on several occasions, warned Gita of dire consequences. Earlier, the district had reported another acid attack in August, this year, when a 28-year-old hearing and speech impaired woman died of grievous burn injuries after a man, allegedly her rapist, had thrown acid on her while she was sleeping at home.
