The state CID on Friday seized a large cache of arms and ammunition from Lichutala, in Saguna area of Nadia district.

Acting on a tip-off, a CID team conducted a raid at Kalyani in Nadia district. According to sources, a team of 20-22 CID officials participated in this raid, which was conducted at different places in Lichutala locality. The Kalyani police had received complaints from locals that miscreants were extorting money, and have been moving in the area with arms openly, according to sources. The CID later received information that a group of people were preparing a large number of bombs.

The arrested include Rajeev Dey – the alleged kingpin – Raju Lahiri alias Tunni Lahiri, Akash Biswas, Amulya Nag and Tapas Middya alias Kanchana. They all were arrested from a small house near Kalyani sub-correctional home, with five improvised arms including one 9 mm pistol in their procession. Two to three motorcycles were also seized.

On being interrogated, the accused revealed that they had more arms and explosives hidden in their house. Five improvised one-shotters, 31 live cartridges and 24 crude bombs were seized by police, who also recovered two kilograms of material used in explosives.

“We are investigating to find out who they used to supply these bombs and arms to. Primarily it seems as if they are local criminals, but interrogation will further reveal if they have any links to any group.

Sources in the CID said this is not the first time the CID has seized arms from the area. The cross-border smuggling of arms between India and Bangladesh has led to Saguna being a crime-prone area, about 35 to 40 kilometres from the Bangladesh border. The locality has witnessed an increase in criminal activities following a surge in construction. These groups also extorted money from truck operators.
