Ibrahim Kondijal, the district president of Congress party in the Dakshina Kannada region, made an insensitive remark with regard to the practice of polygamy in Islam.

In a video posted by The News Minute, Kondijal can be heard saying in Kannada that ‘Islam allows polygamy so that the husband can satisfy his sexual desires’.

“Suppose the wife falls sick (including periods), she cannot have sex and the husband will have to go to a sex worker. Islam says you cannot got to a sex worker. If you want, you can marry again,” Kondijal told a gathering of reporters when he was asked about his opinion on the uniform civil code.

A journalist responded to this remark by Kondijal and asked if he thought it was wrong. Following the question, Kondijal said that Islam only allows men to take more than one wife if they can physically and financially look after the women.

The law commission had released a questionnaire on October 7 seeking the opinion and suggestion of people regarding the Uniform Civil Code. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) however opposed the move and said that it was orchestrated by the BJP-led Centre.
