In a first after being appointed as chairman of the fourth Kerala Administrative Reforms Commission, CPM veteran V S Achuthanandan on Sunday locked horns with the government over the fee structure at private medical colleges. Referring to the Opposition agitation demanding rollback of the fee hike, Achuthanandan said the government stand was wrong. He had earlier met three Opposition MLAs who are agitating at the Assembly complex.
“The government stand on the agitation is not acceptable. The government should take steps to end the agitation of the legislators,” he said. His reaction has embarrassed the government which has categorically denied the demand for rollback.
The Congress-led Opposition was quick to attack the government using the former CM’s remarks. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said all right thinking persons would attest to what Achuthanandan has stated. “It is unfortunate that the government has not taken any creative step to end the agitation. The government should at least respect the CPM veteran’s words,” said Chennithala. While Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan refused to comment on the issue, his Cabinet colleague E P Jayarajan said, “Anyone who can understand the issue would not say anything against the government stand.”
