Gujarat Chief Minister-designate Vijay Rupani on Friday thanked the BJP leadership for giving him such a “big opportunity” and promised to make the state a role model for India.
“Thank all for giving us such a big opportunity, will put in all the efforts to make Gujarat the role model of India (sic),” Rupani said. “The responsibility I have been handed is great and we (Rupani and Nitin Patel) are thankful for this.”
Rupani was a surprise choice for the top post as deputy chief minister-designate Patel was widely considered to take over Anandiben Patel. However, Patel had to settle for the deputy role as he does not bring the kind of experience that Rupani has to steer the party through the 2017 state assembly elections.
Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who was appointed as an observer in the legislature meeting to pick Anandiben’s successor, told media that the decision to make Rupani chief minister was an unanimous choice. “More than ten of our ministers supported Vijay Rupani as chief minister and Nitin Patel as deputy chief minsiter,” said Gadkari.
Saying that the future of the party is secure under Rupani and Patel, Gakdkari added that the duo will help Gujarat reach news heights. “‘Sabka saath sabka vikas’, BJP ki parampara rahi hai. Vijay Rupani aur Nitin Patel ke netritva main hum sabko saath leke chalenge,” said Gadkari.
