CURFEW was imposed in Vidisha town Sunday afternoon after violence broke out over the murder of a Bajrang Dal activist on Saturday.

Deepak Kushwaha, 20, was killed allegedly by a group of assailants, including a dozen Muslims and a Hindu.

Hindu outfits had forced shops and establishments to down shutters on Saturday and given a bandh call on Sunday.

When Kushwaha’s body was being taken home after post mortem, incidents of arson and stone pelting were reported, especially near the place where most of the accused lived.

The shop of one of the accused was torched by the mob that continued to swell. The mob indulged in arson in several places, forcing the district administration to impose section 144. When the situation did not improve, the administration imposed curfew.

“They had no demands, they just wanted to indulge in arson and stone-pelting. We had already arrested 12 persons, including one Hindu, on Saturday itself for the murder,” a senior police officer said.
