The mother and brother of Rohith Vemula, the research scholar who committed suicide at Hyderabad Central University, met BSP chief Mayawati on Monday to press for a law for ending caste-based discrimination on educational campuses.
“Rohith Vemula’s mother (Radhika) and brother (Raja) met BSP chief Mayawati at her residence in Delhi. They want a central law to end discrimination at campuses. They said Rohith was persecuted under the pressure of two Union ministers, forcing him to commit suicide,” a BSP statement said.
As per the statement, Rohith’s mother told Mayawati that Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has made false statements in both the Houses of the Parliament to mislead the people, and “she does not believe that the BJP government at the Centre will be able to give justice to her”.
She thanked Mayawati for raising the demand to include a Dalit member in the judicial inquiry commission formed to probe Rohith’s suicide, the statement said.
Rohith’s mother and brother had earlier called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi, CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury and JD(U) leader KC Tyagi.
