An FIR was on Thursday lodged against 11 persons, including a sub-inspector and a constable, for allegedly harassing a man to settle scores over a dispute in Sigra police station area of Varanasi on April 2014. The action was taken after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on November 15 directed local police to register the FIR.

The complainant Ashwani Kumar Rai had alleged in his complaint that his landlord Ramesh Rai and his associates had thrashed him and his younger brother Anand in Chandwa Chetpur locality on April 14, 2014, following a dispute over vacating the house.
Ashwani also alleged that sub-inspector Anil Singh and constable Ashish Gupta, who arrived at the spot after being informed, detained him and Anand at the Kashi Vidhyapeet outpost where they were assaulted, causing serious injuries to Anand’s legs.
Anil Singh was the then in-charge at Kashi Vidhyapeet outpost. SHO, Sigra police station, K K Mishra said the FIR has been lodged against S-I Anil Singh, constable Ashish Gupta and others including Ramesh Rai on Ashwani Kumar Rai’s complaint and NHRC’s direction. Anil Singh had been transferred to another district, he added.
The charges levelled include IPC sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (Punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), 452 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 325 (Punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 392 (Punishment for robbery) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).
