Uttar Pradesh government gives Rs 5 lakh to kin of youth shot dead by police

The NHRC was at the forefront of exposing the murder of the youth by the police, in response its notices the UP government said a criminal case has been registered against one sub-inspector and five constables.

On intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Uttar Pradesh government has paid Rs five lakh to the kin of 18-year-old Jitender who was brutally beaten and shot dead by police personnel in Mathura two years ago when he refused to pay them bribe.

“He was on his way to the market on his tractor for selling goods, when he was intercepted by some policemen. They demanded bribe which he refused. Subsequently he was brutally assaulted and shot dead,” said an NHRC statement.

“The police also fired upon the protesting mob which resulted in injuries to five persons. Based on the enquires and material on record the commission found that he was on his way to the market on his tractor for selling goods, when he was intercepted by some policemen,” the NHRC statement further said.

They demanded bribe, which he refused. Subsequently, he was brutally assaulted and shot dead. The police also fired upon the protesting mob which resulted in injuries to five persons, it added.

The commission observed that the act of policemen amounted to grave violation of human rights of the victim.

“In response to NHRC’s notices, the UP government informed that a criminal case has been registered against one sub-inspector and five constables and apart from the criminal proceedings, a departmental action had also been initiated against them,” the statement said.
