UP: Month after girl was found dead, father arrested for ‘honour killing’

Around a month after a 16-year-old girl was girl found murdered in Etawah district, her father has been arrested for allegedly killing her, suspecting that she was having an affair. The police had recovered the girl’s body in Bharthana area on September 19. While locals identified the girl, her father claimed that the deceased was not his daughter.

Bharthana Circle Officer Shiv Raj Singh said the father has confessed that he murdered his daughter, as the entire village was allegedly talking about her relations with a local youth. The man was produced before the court Monday, which sent him to jail.

“Police had found a girl lying in a field on September 19. The postmortem report had stated the cause of death as strangulation. While locals identified the girl, the accused denied that she was his daughter. As the police were in the process of verifying the fact, the man, along with his wife and three sons left home,” added the CO.

The police later arrested the man on Sunday morning. During interrogation, he admitted to the murder. “He said he was upset over his daughter’s affair and sent her to a relative’s house in July. On the morning of September 18, he brought her home,” said Singh.

Bharthana police Station Officer Dinesh Kumar said: “The man said that when villagers started talking about his daughter’s affair after she returned, he asked her to go to the nearby village… In a secluded place on the way, he tried to overpower his daughter. As she tried to escape, the man caught and strangulated her with a scarf. He then dumped the body in the field and returned home.”
