Terming demonetisation as ‘shuddhikaran’ (purification), Union Minister of Urban Development and Information Technology Venkaiah Naidu said similar to Bollywood’s role as change-agents, the central government has initiated a national project of behavioural change. “At an unprecedented scale, a motion has been set in our country. On the 8th of this month – in the form of withdrawal of high value currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denomination. This change process touches the lives of all citizens. The Prime Minister wants to have a real Swachh Bharat – along with ‘than’ and ‘man’ – even ‘dhan’ (money) also has to be white,” Naidu said.

Speaking at the 47th edition of International Film Festival of India, Naidu lauded the film industry for being the first to rally behind the Prime Minister in support of his move against black money. “A lot of producers, actor, directors came in support of the demonetisation. Today time has come for younger generation in the film industry to come forward and create the creativity with more meaning with a message, with a proper understanding of solution to the problems and them channelise the people in their own way,” he said.
He said clean money was crucial for peaceful sleep. “But today you can see the position, some people are not able to sleep or weep publicly because of the predicament they have…because they have a lot of unaccounted money. Cleansing of India is going on – the Swachh Bharat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I am not talking about politics – there is a campaign for MODI, not (PM) Modi. MODI means Making of Developed India. Join the campaign, cleanse the public life, clean ourselves, set good example, create role models and become inspiration to other people,” he said.
He also recalled that in 1946, late BR Panthulu called ‘Vijayalakshmi’ on the first demonetisation in the country. “It may be news to many, the first film on the demonetisation of our country. In that production, Panthalu brilliantly projected the negative role of money. Farce (Shady characters) working for their own interest at the cost of common man. Even after seven decades, our people are suffering from such greedy farce. That is why PM has set this current process of change. I understand there will be some bad money in everywhere in politics, public life and cinema also. We have to get rid of it at the earliest so that we can have a peaceful life. So that we can have a progressive future. This suddhikaran set in motion by the pm should add good to the film industry also,” he said.
