Two people died and one was injured during a chase as a motorcycle-borne thief attempted to snatch bags from two women, after they took out money from an ATM near Pattinampakkam in Chennai.

According to the police, Nandini, a school teacher, and her friend Gayatri, who were on a scooter, did not realise that Karunakaran, 35, was following them. “Karunakaran pushed Nandini off the scooter, snatched her bag and fled. Nandini died on the spot,” said a police officer.

Gayatri, who was riding pillion, then took the scooter and chased Karunakaran. “After about a kilometre, he pushed her off the scooter, but he too lost control and ran over a person sleeping on the pavement, who died on the spot,” the officer added. People who gathered at the spot caught Karunakaran and handed him over to the police.
