The High Court at Hyderabad has observed that there should be a rethink on admissions to academic institutions under the sports quota.

Hearing a petition from a student seeking admission to an MBBS course under the sports quota, the court came down heavily on the practice of including all forms of sports in the eligibility list for admission to education institutions.

The bench of Justice V Rama Subramaniam and Justice M Anis noted that except video games, all games have been added to the list. Those who have interest in academics are kept out by the less meritorious due to such quotas not borne out of the constitutional scheme, it said.

The bench stated that sports quota had no constitutional validity and that once admission is given, the sport as well as professional education takes a beating.
