As many as 500 people have been booked after a police team was attacked by a mob in Salabatpura area of the city, which remained tense following an alleged bid of kidnapping of a minor boy for “sacrifice”.

Trouble started to foment Wednesday evening when one Vijay Pali, a native of Nagpur, allegedly tried to take seven-year-old Atik Saiyed, who was playing in a nearby street, to his apartment. However, Atik ran away and cried for help, following which his uncle Irfan Saiyed, along with a few others, reached the spot and went to Pali’s apartment to find that a ritual was in progress. The group contacted police, but before policemen could reach, rumours of a boy being “kidnapped for sacrifice” began to spread via WhatsApp groups. Soon, a mob gathered in the area and as soon as a team of Salabatpura police reached there, the policemen were attacked. Salabatpura inspector B K Vanar said police were probing the kidnapping allegation against Pali, but there was nothing to prove that a “human sacrifice” was planned during the ritual. Pali is in police custody.
