A 14-YEAR-OLD girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her home at 1.30 am on Sunday at a village in Beldanga, Murshidabad. The locals told police that late on Sunday night they heard loud screams from the house. They rushed to the spot to find the girl hanging.
The mother and her two other children were in the same room, one of the neighbours told police and added that the woman even stopped them from taking the victim to the hospital. The mother of the Class IX student claimed that her daughter had committed suicide.
The police have started investigations but have refused to comment on the case. “We are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of the death,” said a police official.
However, the mother has been detained on the basis of the allegations levelled by the locals, who suspected that it was a case of murder and held the women responsible.
“The woman has been taken into custody and we are interrogating her,” the official added. The girl’s siblings also claimed that their sister had killed self. According to a few locals, the deceased had regular fights with her mother over her relationship with a local youth.
