THE DEMOCRATIC Swaraj Party has announced that the suspended AAP Lok Sabha MP from Patiala, Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, will sit on protest at Sector 17 Plaza in Chandigarh on Friday afternoon, asking the state as well as the Centre not to allow excavation of the SYL canal.
In a statement issued on Thursday, AAP president Manjit Singh, said the Supreme Court’s decision on the validity of Punjab Termination of Agreements Act, 2004, has pushed Punjab towards becoming a desert.
“Already, nearly 80 per cent of the area is facing severe water scarcity and even the underground water is drying up. Democratic Swaraj Party feels that like any other natural resources of the states, Punjab owns water and cannot let it flow freely to other states. It is the duty of all Punjabis to come together and put up a strong resistance to the execution of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal project,” he added.
Singh further stated that Punjab has no surplus water and Punjabis would not let it flow freely to other states while its own land is on the verge of becoming a desert for want of surface water.
“The surplus water, if any, would be sold for royalty to the other states and the revenue generated would be used to prop up the sagging economy of Punjab, feels Swaraj Party,” the statement added.
