Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s elder son, a doctor at a government hospital in Srinagar, was on Saturday arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, family sources told IANS. Naim Geelani was arrested at around 10 am when he was on his way to the residence of his father, the hardline Hurriyat leader, at Hyderpora. “He was not allowed inside the house and police arrested him,” a family source told IANS.

WHAT ELSE IS MAKING NEWS

The arrest comes ahead of the senior Geelani’s scheduled “address to the nation” over telephone on Saturday afternoon. The police has barred the entry of the senior Geelani’s family members, media and most visitors to his residence. “Authorities have also installed jammers at the residence to block all phone connectivity,” the source added.

Geelani, who has been leading the unrest in Kashmir Valley since the July 8 killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani, has been under continuous house arrest. Geelani along with other separatist leaders, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, has been issuing the “protest calendars” every week under the banner of “Joint Resistance Leadership”.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had in mid August summoned Naim Geelani and questioned him in connection with a Preliminary Enquiry registered by the probe agency. The state police and security agencies have been picking up many separatist leaders and their party workers, and even those the government feels are “instigators” of the violence.

It is always easy to send other people's kids to fight for your ambitions, how I wish that the kids of these separatists now have their lives destro. I hope his kids become militants and he is alive when they are shot dead. Allah should bless Geelani with martyrdom. Hope this entire family attains holy martyrdom while he is alive. Then he will know how it feels.

Perfect - I hope they take away his property and give it to the widows of the police in Kashmir. If they do not want to be part of India, they cannot own property in India. I hope all separatists are put in jail, not in Kashmir, but other parts of India. Tamil Nadu, maybe or Kerala or somewhere at the very end of the country. They cannot and should not be able to own property, open bank accounts or buy/sell anything. Since they like to shove the kids of other people to militancy and stone pelting and all that, I say it is natural to have their kids be sent to jail and lose property. lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;These people should have their economic benefits taken away - let them join militancy themselves. See how it feels like.

This is such a moment in Kashmir history that whatever the security forces do to achieve the officially igned task of suppressing the self-determination movement, their actions actually end up achieving just the opposite effect. Arrest of Dr. Geelani and preventing him from seeing his father is not going to sit well with larger opinion in JandK or among sagacious Indian people, especially those who have seen the country over decades. This arrest or the arrest of tens of thousands will be counter-productive,

Good that his VIP treatment is coming to an end now. Nowhere else in the world an open separatist and terrorist supporter is given freedom and resources like this.

There should be enough material to consign old man Geelani to cold storage for a while. Just call his bluff and do it instead of providing him and his ilk with VIP treatment at tax payers' expense.
