The Congress Friday petitioned the Election Commission to take action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for violating the model code of conduct in Kerala through his comparison of the state with Somalia. The party said it was “constrained” to file the complaint due to the “unfortunate and irresponsible conduct” of the Prime Minister at a Kerala rally on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Congress.

“As per clause 2 of the Model Code of Conduct, criticism of other parties on their workers based on unverified allegations or distortions shall be avoided. The Prime Minister’s statement comparing the state of Kerala to another country Somalia is sheer distortion of facts and rather tantamounts to an unverified allegation completely devoid of merit, and hence a violation of clause 2,” the party said in its petition.
