Five teenage girls and a 50-year-old woman drowned in a small irrigation dam near Hingna, Nagpur on Sunday when they were immersing religious idols. “One of the girls entered the water and apparently started drowning. Another girl went into the deep side to rescue her and drowned. The rest of them also drowned in the rescue effort,” police said.

People gathered at the spot and protested against the administration for the absence of a signboard about the depth of the water and demanded action against the contractor. They alleged the contractor had dug a deep trench in the dam, which should have been levelled. The bodies were sent for autopsy after the authorities assured the villagers that action would be initiated against the contractor if found guilty.
