Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee began distributing land deeds to 9,117 farmers and cheques to around 800 on Wednesday, in line with the Supreme Court ruling asking the government to return the land acquired by the erstwhile CPI(M) government in 2006 to setup a Nano car factory.

In a show of strength, thousands of TMC workers turned up at Singur, where they had fought pitched battles with the police during the violent 2006 land acquisition.

On August 31, in a big setback to Tata Motors, the Supreme Court cancelled the land deal sanctioned by the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya-government. The apex court ordered the West Bengal Government to hand the land back to the farmers in the next 12 weeks. The court also added that the farmers do not have to return the compensation they received from the government because they were deprived of their livelihood for a decade.
