Admitting to a few security lapses, Madhya Pradesh Minister of Jails, Kusum Mehdele on Tuesday told news channel NDTV that the security forces should be praised for tracking and killing the eight SIMI activists. “You should praise us for killing the accused even though they escaped…they were stopped from carrying out more dangerous acts,” she said.
Mehdale added that some CCTVs inside the jail may not be working. “I accept there are lapses on our part. Some CCTVs in the jail may not be working. How they managed to scale the wall I don’t know,” she said.
On Monday, eight undertrails escaped from Bhopal Central Jail after killing a security guard. They were accused of various criminal acts ranging from murder to sedition. Questions have been raised by opposition parties about the encounter and the demand for an independent inquiry gained currency after two videos of the encounter surfaced. One of the video showed a police personnel pumping bullets into one of the unarmed activists’ body.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJP leader including Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan maintained that the opposition was making ‘baseless’ allegations for vote bank politics and asked for a NIA probe.
