RJD chief Lalu Prasad and BSP supremo Mayawati Tuesday raised doubts on the Bhopal encounter, in which eight SIMI activists were killed hours after they escaped from prison. “I have my doubts about the Bhopal encounter. There should be a probe to find out if it was fake or genuine,” Lalu said in Patna. Mayawati, meanwhile, accused the MP government of using police for fulfilling the RSS agenda and demanded a judicial probe into the encounter.

“Eight prisoners related to SIMI were unarmed. They could have been arrested easily again, but no attempts were made in this regard. Prima facie this matter appears suspicious and justice demands judicial probe into the entire incident of encounter,” she said in a statement.

The Left parties, on their part, issued statements raising doubts and demanded a judicial probe. The CPM said an NIA probe, as announced by CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, would “neither be credible nor acceptable”.

The CPM Politburo said those killed were undertrials whose guilt had not been established. “The state government owes a full explanation how this occurred,” it added. The CPI too raised the same demand and said the BJP and RSS were trying to politicise the fight against terror.
