SHYAMVAR RAI, the former driver of Indrani Mukerjea, was Monday granted pardon in the murder case of her daughter Sheena Bora by a special CBI court. Rai had written to the court last month seeking to turn approver and reveal all he knew about the murder conspiracy. The CBI too had given its nod to Rai’s plea.
Rai will now be a prosecution witness in the case and his testimony can be used against the other three accused — Indrani, her husband Peter Mukerjea and former husband Sanjeev Khanna. Special Judge H S Mahajan in his order observed, “In my view, evidence of the applicant would be of immense importance and assistance to the case of the prosecution. It is very difficult and at times hard to get such a direct evidence and first-hand account of a criminal conspiracy. This being the position, I find merit in the applicant as well as (the) stand of prosecution in the matter.”
The CBI had given its no-objection to Rai being made an approver with the condition that he makes a full disclosure as a prosecution witness.
Rai on Monday assured the court that he would abide by the condition.
