Senior journalist Gopakumar dies at 58

He won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.

Senior journalist and editor-in-chief of Asianet News, T N Gopakumar, died here on Saturday. He was 58.

Gopakumar had been with Asianet since its inception in 1991. He gained popularity during his stint as anchor of a weekly news programme, Kannadi (Mirror), which showcased both human interest and investigative stories. He is known to have played a crucial role in shaping the course of television journalism in Kerala.

Popularly known as TNG, Gopakumar began his career with The Indian Express. He later moved to The Statesman, India Today and Mathrubhumi. He also reported for the BBC before moving to Asianet.

Gopakumar directed the film Jeevan Mashai as well as the Malayalam serial Verukal.

He left an imprint on literature too, bagging the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for his work Sucheendram Rekhakal.

He is survived by wife Hether, and daughters Gayathri and Kaveri. The cremation was held on Saturday evening with state honours.
