The Supreme Court has issued notices to 25 Telangana MLAs who have defected to the ruling TRS, as well as Assembly Speaker S Madhusudan Chary. They have been directed to file a counter-affidavit in three weeks on a petition filed by Congress MLA A Sampath Kumar.

The petitioner stated that when the TRS came to power in 2014, it had only 63 MLAs. However, the strength of the TRS in the Assembly grew to 89 by 2016, and this was achieved through defections, he said.

The Speaker was not taking any decision on the numerous complaints made by political parties in this regard, the petition said. By not taking action against the MLAs — 12 from TDP, 7 from Congress, three from YSRCP, two from BSP and one from CPI — the Speaker had proved that he was functioning under the influence of the CM, the petition added.
