Under attack from its alliance partner Congress for counting out Rahul Gandhi out of the list of probable PM candidates, the RJD went into damage control mode Sunday, saying Rahul was “capable of becoming PM”.

Deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said here: “Every party treats its supreme leader as a PM candidate. Rahul Gandhi has been putting a lot of efforts and is capable of becoming PM. But if Nitish Kumar becomes PM, every Bihari would be more happy”.

The controversy started after RJD chief Lalu Prasad said that Nitish Kumar, Mamata Banerjee, Mulayam Singh Yadav and J Jayalalithaa were PM probables for 2019 battle, leaving Rahul out of his list. With his veiled attack on the Congress, Lalu had also kept SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in good humour. Interestingly, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has been campaigning against the SP in UP.

Clarifying his remark Sunday, Lalu said: “I have never said Rahul Gandhi is not capable of becoming PM. I only meant to say that Congress has not declared its PM candidate”. Tejashwi too said that the Congress was yet to announce a name of its PM candidate for 2019 polls.
