A strong supporter of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Ram Gopal was expelled on October 24. His expulsion was seen as a retaliation for the sacking of Shivpal Yadav, Mulayam’s younger brother and Akhilesh’s rival, from the state cabinet. At a press conference, Shivpal had accused Ram Gopal of trying to divide the party at the behest of the BJP.
