Arunachal Pradesh Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa was dismissed from his post on Monday, days after Home Minister Rajnath Singh informed President Pranab Mukherjee that his continuation at the post has become untenable.
Later, a defiant Rajkhowa told a Guwahati-based TV channel that he would only step down when the President dismisses him. Previously, the Centre asked Rajkhowa to resign on “health grounds” after the Supreme Court pulled him up for dismissing an elected government without proper cause. In the meeting with the President, sources said that Rajnath told Pranab that the Centre has lost confidence in Rajkhowa.
Rajkhowa had reportedly asked his staff to pack his bags as the president order removing him as governor could be arrive at any moment; and that he did not want to stay at the Governor’s residence even for a minute after being dismissed.
Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan will take additional charge of Arunachal until the Centre finds a suitable replacement.
