Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday reached the residence of ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal in Bhiwani, Haryana to attend his cremation ceremony. Grewal had allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday over the “non-implementation” of One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme. Grewal was part of the long-running protest by ex-servicemen at Jantar Mantar, demanding the “full implementation” of the OROP scheme. He had also written a letter to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar about the same.
Apart from Rahul, TMC leader Derek O’Brien and former Haryana Congress leader Devender Singh Hooda also reached Bhiwani Thursday. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is also expected to reach Grewal’s residence. Meanwhile, politics over his death and OROP became intense on Wednesday after Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and other leaders were detained by Delhi Police as they tried to meet with Grewal’s family.
On Wednesday morning, police prevented Rahul Gandhi from entering the hospital to meet the victim’s family and detained Sisodia at the premises. Later, police detained Gandhi, too, and took both leaders to the Mandir Marg police station. Kejriwal was detained later at the Lady Hardinge Hospital where Grewal’s body had been taken around 7.30 am for post-mortem. Kejriwal was confined in his car for hours outside the Lady Hardinge hospital before being taken to the R K Puram station — he was at the station until nearly midnight after . Gandhi was detained again later while trying to meet Grewal’s family.
