Congress Party held a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Monday where CWC members unanimously urged the party vice president Rahul Gandhi to take up the position of party president. The meeting was chaired by Rahul in the absence of party president Sonia Gandhi where Rahul took up an aggressive stand and attacked the BJP from the outset. Rahul didn’t accept the proposal put across by CWC members but isn’t opposed to it as well. Party sources say that another CWC meeting is being planned in around two weeks time where the matter will be taken up formally.
The demand has been floating around the party since a long time now. Party members, workers and the cadres are reportedly bracing up for a change of guard.
A senior party source privy to the developments told indianexpress.com: “The proposal was put up in front of Rahulji in the CWC meeting today. Party members have appealed again for him to take the position of Congress president. It is more a matter of when rather than if, I think we all know that.”
Speaking on the prospects of formally moving the motion to appoint him as the party president, the source said, “Another meeting of the Congress Working Committee is being planned, may be as soon as in two weeks times.”
“He is the leader the party needs and the leader the party demands. It has been coming for a long time and we hope he agrees because the CWC is behind him. Soniaji has led from the front magnificently. Now we expect Rahulji will emulate the same for the party and the people,” the source added.
