Punjab polls: Akalis rebel, calls party candidate ‘outsider’

The Jalandhar Cantt seat was vacated by former India hockey team skipper Pargat Singh after resigning from the party some time ago.

A few Jalandhar Akali politicians have rebelled against the party for choosing to give the Jalandhar Cantt constituency candidature to MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) memeber Paramjit SIngh Raipur and district party chief Gurcharan Singh Channi flayed party leadership for its choice. The Jalandhar Cantt seat was vacated by former India hockey team skipper Pargat Singh after resigning from the party some time ago. The rebel leaders alleged Makkar was an outsider. He worked in Kapurthala constituency for the past five years, they said.

It is learnt that Channi is quite upset over the issue and had expressed his resentment with the party high command. A nine-member committee has been formed under Channi to take up the matter with the top SAD leadership. Talking to The Indian Express, Channi said he will meet SAD president over the matter. Raipur’s family was claiming the ticket for his NRI brother Jaspal Singh Dhesi, who has a business in UK and also deals in real estate back home.
