A day after a farmer and his mother committed suicide at Cheema Jodhpur village in Punjab’s Barnala district leading to a day-long dharna by farmer unions, union leaders reached a compromise with the administration and police over compensation for the farmer’s kin.
The administration has agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to Manjeet Singh — son of Balvir Kaur and brother of Baljeet Singh Ballu. The unions had earlier demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh. The dharna was lifted in the evening and the bodies were cremated under police cover at the Cheema Jodhpur village.
Also, in a meeting between Bharti Kisan Union (Dakaunda) members, the Barnala DC and SSP, it was decided that a job would be given to one family member of Balvir and Baljeet as per qualifications. The family has been asked to submit an application in this regard.
Police said they have arrested two people on charges of abetment for suicide and assault. Barnala SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor said, “We have arrested two persons — Baljeet Singh and his namesake Baljeet Singh Kaion…” Meanwhile, another two suspects — Jaspreet Singh and Manna Singh — are yet to be arrested, police said.
