Punjab: Man, ‘minor’ held for acid attack

The accused have been identified as Harpreet alias Vicky Kanda (mid-20s) and a minor who worked under him at a jewellery shop.

A Youth and his minor accomplice were held for allegedly throwing acid on an 18-year-old woman in Fazilka’s Jalalabad town Friday.

The incident took place when the victim had gone to pick her sister. Two youths on a motorcycle threw acid on her then. “However, she managed to save her face as she had her back to the attackers,” said a relative of the victim.

The accused have been identified as Harpreet alias Vicky Kanda (mid-20s) and a minor who worked under him at a jewellery shop.

While minor was nabbed by area residents, Vicky was arrested a few hours later. “They have been booked under attempt to murder charges,” said SSP Fazilka Narendra Bhargav. Both were produced in court Saturday and have been sent to two days’ police custody.

Meanwhile, the minor, in a video being circulated on social media, is purportedly seen saying, “I was told that it was water that I had to throw … I had no idea that it was acid.”

The victim’s mother said that Vicky had been troubling the girl for more than a month. “He had threatened her if she did not accept his friendship. I had even visited the boy’s parents and complained. They had assured me that nothing untoward would happen,” said the mother,

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot. Doctors said she is stable but suffered deep burns.
