Lambasting the Badal government for failing to secure religious places, the Punjab Congress demanded a thorough probe into the violence that erupted Wednesday over the control of a gurdwara at Mallan village in Muktsar district.

In a statement, PPCC leaders Karan K Brar, Bhai Harnirpal S Kukku, Harcharan S Sotha and Nathu Ram said the incident had once against exposed the breakdown of law and order in Punjab under the Badal regime.

The PPCC leaders lamented that even the policemen on the spot failed to avert the violence.

They pointed out that that tension at the gurdwara had been building up since Wednesday night, after one Makhan Singh, who had been overseeing the gurdwara affairs for the past several years, was forcibly thrown out of the premises by the rival faction led by Naib Singh. Yet, the authorities failed to make adequate security provision, they added.
