After a “list” of Congress candidates for the 2017 Punjab election went viral on social media and created a furore in the party on Sunday, state party chief Capt Amarinder Singh clarified that the official list is yet to be announced.
He said the “fake” list was the handiwork of “mischievous” elements to create confusion.
Unlike other parties, the Congress has a proper, transparent and well established system and procedure for finalising candidates, he said.
The list that went viral had 55 names, including most of the MLAs from their respective constituencies and strong contenders for certain segments.
Amarinder disclosed that the list of applicants was still being scrutinised.
It will be submitted to the high command within a week, where it will be referred to the screening committee and the final decision will be taken by the Central Election Committee (CEC) headed by All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi.
Amarinder said, the party will update everyone about the process and also the date when the list will be submitted to the high command by the Punjab Congress Committee.
