NEWLY appointed Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Charanjit Singh Channi, who on Saturday met the family of a 12-year-old girl who was mowed down by a bus owned by a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader earlier this week in Ferozepur, claimed that SAD MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha was threatening the victim’s family.

The allegation comes a day after the victim’s father, Palwinder Singh, accused the ruling party leaders and the police of pressuring the family to compromise with the police and the SAD.

“Virsa Singh Valtoha is forcing the family to strike a compromise with the Akali leader who is the bus owner. The family has sought protection from the Congress party, and we will provide so. We have decided to hold a bhog in memory of the victim girl at the site of the accident in Makhu. We will also take responsibility of the bhog at the girl’s home,” said Channi who met Palwinder Singh at Circuit House in Amritsar along with other party leaders.

He said the police have registered a case under Section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC, which, he said, was not enough.

“It is a fit case for IPC 302 (murder) and the bus driver and the owner of the bus company should be immediately booked under the same,” said Channi.
