Punjab: 5 new faces in 2nd Akali list of 9 candidates

Five new faces, including son of an Akali leader close to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, figure in SAD’s second list of nine candidates announced Saturday for the Assembly polls in State due early next year.

Former bureaucrat Darbara Singh Guru, who contested unsuccessfully from Bhaduar constituency in 2012, has been named as party candidate from Bassi Pathana, the constituency currently represented by SAD legislator Justice Nirmal Singh (retd) who was named as party candidate for Chamkaur Sahib in the first list of 69 candidates released by SAD. Sitting SAD MLA Gobind Singh Longowal, who had won Dhuri bypoll last year, is party candidate from Sunam, the constituency currently represented by Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa who would be fielded from Lehragaga this time.

The new faces to be fielded by SAD include noted Kabbadi player Gulzar Singh Moonak, who has been named as party candidate from Dirba, and sports shoes and leather items manufacturer from Malerkotla Mohammad Owais who replaces sitting SAD legislator from Malerkotla Farzana Alam as the party candidate. Farzana is wife of former DGP Mohammad Izhar Alam. A surgeon by profession, Dr Nishan Singh is the SAD candidate from Budhladha and he too would be contesting Assembly polls for the first time.

SAD announced party ticket to Suba Singh Badal, another first-timer, for Jaito constituency. He is son of former minister Gurdev Singh Badal who is very close to the CM.

Miffed at being sidelined where Parkash Singh Bhatti was made the halqa incharge of Jaito constituency, Suba Singh Badal had announced to contest as Independent from Jaito, the Scheduled Caste reserved constituency, in September this year.

In the first list of 69 candidates announced on November 16, SAD had named Bhatti as party candidate from another SC reserved constituency of Balluana. Suba Singh Badal is among the five new faces being fielded by SAD.

Tirath Singh Mahla, Moga SAD president, is another first-timer who would contest from Baghapurana, replacing sitting legislator Maheshinder Singh, who recently quit SAD after learning he would not be fielded by SAD from the constituency.

SAD has retained sitting MLA Mohinder Kaur Josh as party candidate from Sham Chaurasi constituency. The party named Jagdeep Singh Nakai as party candidate in second list of nine candidates from Mansa replacing current legislator Prem Mittal.

In the first list of 69 candidates announced by SAD, there were 17 new faces.
