Policeman among four dead in Pune-Mumbai Expressway accident

According to the police, the deceased were travelling to Pune when, around 1.40 pm, the driver lost control and the car crashed into the rear side of the container.

Two couples were killed when a speeding car collided with a container on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway at Lonavala in the early hours of Saturday. The deceased have been identified as police naik Rajendra Vishnu Chavan (47), his wife Vanita (42), both residents of Maruti apartment, Dattapada in Borivli, Mumbai, and Shankar Marot Wangule (33) and his wife Pooja Shankar (26), both residents of Songhar in Mahad taluka of Raigad district.

According to the police, the deceased were travelling to Pune when, around 1.40 pm, the driver lost control and the car crashed into the rear side of the container. The impact was so severe that it caused the death of all the four passengers.

The Lonavala city police removed the bodies stuck in the damaged car and they were sent to the hospital for post-mortem. The incident caused a traffic jam for some time. Police said that Chavan was attached to the Marol headquarters of Mumbai police and that he was driving the car. Probe is on to know what is the relationship between Chavan and Wangule and for what purpose they were coming to Pune. The police have informed the family members of the deceased.
