Panjab University vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover and senior BJP leader and Senator Satya Pal Jain met Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi on Thursday to apprise him of the financial problems of the institute.
Grover said: “We have cleared the disbelief regarding the incapability of the university to generate income with the revised budget estimation that was chaired in the meeting of board of finance, in which a member from the UGC was also present. We have managed to show that our income is now more than our expenditure.”
In the first installment, we will get a grant of Rs 80 crore from the UGC on Monday. “It was supposed to come today (Thursday), but it has been delayed till Monday, the officials are on leave. Our claims to increase the grant have been justified. We hope after the clearance of the Board of Finance revised estimates by the Syndicate and Senate, the UGC and the Ministry of Finance will also clear the required grant of Rs 227 crore,” said Grover.
In the meeting, Javadekar agreed that the concerns of the university are genuine and he will take up the matter with the officials of UGC, MHRD and Finance Ministry. If need be, he will ask the VC to visit him again.
Satya Pal Jain: “We got a very positive and sympathetic response from the minister. From the meeting, I concluded that I am confident that he will address and resolve the issues of the university in the coming days.”
However, in the Board of Finance meeting held on August 1, J K Tripathi, the joint secretary finance and the nominee from the UGC, stated that the UGC cannot commit about the amount of grant to be released. The same would be intimated to the university after the approval of the Revised Allocation of Budget of the UGC by the MHRD in October.
