Delhi Congress chief spokesperson and President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee Saturday filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell of Delhi Police after she was allegedly harassed online by an unknown person.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Mukherjee said she decided to publicly shame the man after he sent her lewd messages on Facebook messenger Friday night.

“The messages are obscene… I have put up the screenshots on Facebook because he deserves to be shamed. I have tagged him as well so that he can see how others are reacting to his behaviour. My intention here is… we should not sit quietly and tolerate this,” she said.

Mukherjee said she understood that as a politician, she was open to public scrutiny and vulnerable to trolling, but her decision was motivated by the fact that “the messages were personal and obscene”.

“I checked his profile and he isn’t a political person. He is not known to me and he has not messaged me earlier. He is just making lewd comments. The police investigation will take its course but… we should not be taking this lightly.”

Mukherjee posted screenshots of the messages she received from ‘Partha Mandal of West Bengal’ on her Facebook wall. She also wrote, “This pervert Partha Mandal is sending me dirty sexual messages. My 1st reaction was to ignore & block him. But then I thought the silence wud encourage him to find other victims. Just blocking & reporting is not enough. I strongly feel such ppl shd be publicly exposed & humiliated. I’m posting screenshots of his profile & messages he sent me. I’m also tagging him. Pls share this post & tag this rat as a msg that these pervert acts will not be taken lightly.”

Police have started investigating the matter. “We are in the process of registering a case under the IT Act and relevant sections of the IPC. We are investigating the matter,” said Anyesh Roy, DCP, Cyber Crime.
