Kozhikode Police has booked a preacher for allegedly insulting a woman for shaking hands with a man in public.

The woman, a law student, had filed a police complaint that the preacher, Naushad Ahsani, had insulted her for shaking hands with Finance Minister Thomas Isaac at a public event.

According to the police, Isaac attended a debate at the woman’s law college in Kozhikode a month ago. While giving away the prizes, the minister shook hands with the winners, including the complainant.

Later, the preacher allegedly raised the issue in one of his speeches. “Showing the photograph, Ahsani told his audience that shaking hands with a man is against Sharia law. He reportedly talked about the woman in an insulting manner. As the video of the speech was circulated on social media, the woman filed a complaint with Kozhikode police,” said a police source. Ahsani will be questioned, the police said.
