Parties across the spectrum welcomed the Supreme Court directive ordering cinema halls to play the national anthem before every screening, saying this would strengthen nationalism and inculcate patriotism. “It is a very good decision. It will inculcate a sense of patriotism among people particularly the younger generation. I am very happy about it,” said Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu. BJP’s Shrikant Sharma said, “BJP welcomes this order and commends the court for this. It will strengthen the spirit of nationalism. National anthem and Tricolour unite us as a nation and this unity will be further strengthened.’
” The Opposition Congress also welcomed the order and said it supported all aspects of “genuine nationalism”. “We support in principle everything which enhances the respect and the dignity of this nation. Therefore, in principle, we support this,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said. He said the implementation of the order, however, must be done with a lot of care. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said he saw nothing wrong with the Supreme Court order but wondered how successful it would be in promoting nationalism or patriotism. “What I believe is that children should be taught about (respecting the national anthem) from very young age,” he said.
