Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of a 750-bed AIIMS in Bathinda on November 25, months after a similar exercise at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The Bathinda hospital will cost approximately Rs 925 crore and is expected to be completed by the first half of 2020. Estimated to cost Rs 1,010 crore, the AIIMS in Gorakhpur is slated to be completed by March 2020. Both Punjab and Uttar Pradesh are going to the polls next year.

The Union Health Ministry has finalised a common deadline for the medical institutes in Gorakhpur, Jalah (in Assam’s Kamrup district) and Bathinda. Land acquisition for AIIMS-Gorakhpur is still not complete as a result of a lingering court battle.

The Health Ministry has also been asked to expedite work on the proposed AIIMS in both Jammu and Kashmir regions. The one in Jammu, scheduled to be built in Vijaypur, Samba, was announced after a prolonged agitation in the region. The AIIMS in the Valley is proposed to be set up in Awantipora, Pulwama.
