Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan, known for his iconic role as MI6 agent in the James Bond series, on Thursday claimed that pan masala manufacturer Pan Bahar had violated his contract by falsely presenting him as a brand ambassador for its entire product line, including its tobacco-infused “mouth freshener”.

The actor released a statement expressing his “heartfelt apologies” for causing offence, if any, and blamed Pan Bahar for ‘grossly manipulating’ media outlets into believing that he endorsed the brand. Tobacco products in India come with a warning stating that its consumption will cause cancer.

“Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women’s healthcare and research programs that improve human health and alleviate suffering,” his statement read.

People.com reported that Brosnan’s contract explicitly stated that he was to endorse a “breath freshener/tooth whitener”. He claimed to have committed himself to advertise for just one product as Pan Bahar allegedly claimed it was an “all-natural containing neither tobacco, supari, nor any other harmful ingredient.” Brosnan demanded the company to remove him from its advertising campaign, and claimed to have had no prior knowledge of endorsing something that would harm one’s health.

The ad campaign raised eyebrows in India, with social media users mocking the actor for ‘falling on hard times’. A photoshop battle soon ensued, pocking fun at Brosnan for his choice of endorsement. The reaction has largely been negative as an actor of his stature had promoted a product that is harmful to health.

This could only be half True. Brosnan's claim that he was unaware of the ingredients sounds hollow, since the ingredients are clearly mentioned .lt;br/gt;Brosnan is not all that stupid and dumb that he does not know what he is doing. Looks like a case of wrong advise to him without realising that it can harm his image.

you study here on subsidised education by Govt. on tax payers money and you settle in other country and talking about here. You are also Indian, your also from IIT, this mentality is not expected from you. As my friend said you stay in India and do some contribution to this people. Otherwise you are a insult to IIT, to India. The same person when goes to other country he adhere to the rules, what to do the law enforcement and politicians should change themselves to the improvement.

Well, this should be a lesson well learnt....Brosnan or any celebrity should first learn all about what they are endorsing before agreeing to do it! Money is attractive even to the super rich and educated and often celebrities endorse stuff they wouldn't dream of using. To expect Brosnan to know what lt;br/gt;"Pan" means is unfair. " Paan" by itself is used as a digestive, but mixed with other stuff may be something else. If Mr Brosnan feels that he was misled, he should sue the company and donate that money to cancer charity in India!

Fair point but you must also see the fact there are people whose conditions are far worse than slaves'. Many in India are treated worse than stray dogs, whilst Indians in general are treated with respect and dignity in other countries.

Pierce Brosnan is not alone. Not many Indian celebrities would have consumed the products they endorse.

The onus is on brosnan if he is promoting a product. Isn't he responsible to find out what people are going to ociate with him? Does he only looks at the money being offered and not what it is for? This is very lame on his part and exposes his greed for endorsing products without knowing.
