A PhD scholar of Central University of Rajasthan allegedly committed suicide on Friday. Mohit Kumar Chauhan, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was pursuing his PhD in Mathematics from the university.
On Friday evening, his friends found him hanging from the ceiling in his hostel room.
“It is a very sad thing. His friends found him in his room and informed me at about 8:30 pm. I rushed to the hospital but he had been declared dead by then,” vice-chancellor A K Pujari told The Indian Express.
While some university sources said the scholar was upset after a meeting with the vice-chancellor and committed suicide right after, the V-C rubbished such rumours.
“I met all PhD scholars today (Friday) and he was not even present. It is unfortunate because the meeting was very positive and had he been there, it might have boosted his morale,” Pujari said.
“His friends were also surprised to not see him at the meeting. So they went looking for him right after the meeting ended at 6:30 pm,” he added.
The student reportedly had an altercation with his research guide. “Not to my knowledge. We don’t know much right now. Not even what he wrote in his suicide note,” said the vice-chancellor.
