Days after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail of RJD leader Mohammad Shahabuddin and sent him back to jail, another petition was filed in the apex court against him on Thursday seeking his transfer from Siwan to another jail in other states.
On October 1, the apex court had ordered the Bihar government to take him into custody immediately underlining ‘societal interest’ and his criminal antecedents. The Supreme Court bench of Justice P C Ghose and Justice Amitava Roy had set aside the bail order passed by the Patna High Court on September 7. It held that “the High Court was not justified in granting bail” to the gangster-turned politician.
Moments after the court’s decision, Shahabuddin surrendered before a court in Siwan and turned himself in. Shahabuddin will be sent back to Bhagalpur jail. In a statement to the media after his surrender, Shahabuddin said he respects the judiciary and was ready to surrender as soon as the Supreme Court cancelled his bail. He, however, added, “My supporters will give a befitting reply to Nitish Kumar in the next elections.”
Shahabuddin was granted bail by the Patna High Court on September 7 in connection with murder of an eye-witness, whose two brothers had been killed by his henchmen. He had been convicted and sentenced to life term.
