National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials on Wednesday took Gurdaspur SP Salwinder Singh and his cook, Madan Gopal, with them to recreate the sequence of their “abduction” and cross-check their statements, local eyewitnesses claimed.
“They took him out of the car at the spot where he said he was waylaid and they were questioning him there,” said Prithipal Singh, a local who had come to slain driver Ikagar Singh’s house on a condolence visit.
“Some of us were watching from a distance,” he added. They were also taken to the spot in Simbli where the terrorists allegedly jettisoned the duo.
On Wednesday, Som Raj – the man who heads the Panj Peer Dargah (shrine) in Talur village where SP Salwinder Singh went with his jeweller friend Rajesh Verma and cook Madan Gopal – said that the three arrived at 9 pm on December 31 and left by 9:30 pm. Later, it also emerged that Madan Gopal is actually Som Raj’s uncle.
When contacted, Verma contradicted Som Raj’s version and said that they went to the shrine between 10:30 pm and 10:45 pm on the New Year’s eve and stayed there for 15-20 minutes.
“It was late and there was no one at the shrine at that time,” said Verma, adding that they went Som Raj’s house that’s located nearby.
Som Raj, however, denied this and said that the trio did not visit his house and were offered tea at the shrine itself.
“I do not know why Som Raj is saying this. I am telling the truth. Investigations will reveal the truth,” said Verma.
