POLICE ON Friday arrested two persons, including a pastor, on charges of conversion in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. The arrest came just hours after the police rescued the two from right-wing activists who had allegedly tied them to a tree.

Pastor Ramlal Kori and a friend were allegedly kidnapped late Thursday from Gadra village by Bajrang Dal activists. The two were taken to a forest, beaten up and tied to a tree.

“The two were blindfolded and beaten up. The police rescued them around 4 am,’’ Rewa SP Sanjay Kumar told The Indian Express.

The Mauganj Police registered an FIR against two dozen people, including Bajrang Dal activists, in connection with assault and illegal confinement of the pastor and his friend. Provisions under the SC/ST Act were also invoked.

However, no one was arrested till late Friday.

After the FIR was registered, a person turned up at the police station accusing the pastor and his friend of using inducement to convert people. Kumar said the two were produced before a local magistrate who sent them to judicial custody.
