Paralysed after heart attack, Gandhi’s grandson critical, BJP promises to bear medical expenses

A week after Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, Kanubhai Gandhi, 86, was admitted to a private hospital in Surat, the city BJP Saturday said it will bear his medical expenses. Kanubhai Gandhi has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Surat since last Saturday after he suffered a heart attack, which has paralysed left side of his body. He continues to be under intensive care.

Kanubhai is currently being cared for by the Punjabi Samaj of Surat. He is accompanied by his wife, Shivalaxmi (89). They have been staying at the guest room of Radhakrishna Temple at Athwalines. Last week, when Kanubhai complained of severe chest pain, Radhakrishna Temple trust president Kailash Chhabra, 65, rushed him to a private hospital. Chhabra said, “He is on ventilator. We are hoping for his speedy recovery.”

On Saturday, Surat city BJP president Nitin Bhajiyawala, vice-president P V S Sarma and others visited the hospital and met Kanubhai. The BJP leaders told Chhabra and doctors that the Surat city BJP was ready to bear all medical expenses. Surat city BJP vice-president P V S Sarma said, “Seeing his financial condition, we have decided to take care of all of his medical expenses.”
